People Like You Helped Them Make History… the Grassroots Heroes of 2018

With the support of people just like you, this year It Starts Today distributed $499,502.86 to Democratic nominees across the country.

What did that support mean?

It helped those Democratic nominees make history.

Nominees like Ilhan Omar. When she and her father fled their home in Mogadishu for a refugee camp in Kenya during the Somali Civil War, there was no way she could imagine becoming the first Somali-American to serve in Congress. But thanks to support from It Starts Today donors and the voters of Minnesota’s 5th District, she’ll make history in 2019.

Connecticut’s 5th District made history with Jahana Hayes, the 2016 National Teacher of the Year, who will become the first African-American woman from New England ever to serve in Congress. She couldn’t have done it without support from people just like you.

State Rep. Abby Finkenauer, a 29-year-old daughter of a union pipe fitter and a public school teacher, turfed out a two-term GOP congressman to represent Iowa’s 1st District. With help from It Starts Today monthly subscribers, she’s become the youngest woman ever elected to Congress and the first woman elected to the House from Iowa.

Sharice Davids, a former professional mixed martial arts fighter, was raised by her Army veteran mom in Army bases around the world. She went from community college to Cornell – and now to Congress. After her breakthrough win in Kansas 3rd Congressional district, she’s making history by becoming the first lesbian Native American congresswoman. And our donors helped her get there.

Lucy McBath became involved with Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America after she tragically lost her 17-year-old son to gun violence. Yesterday, the voters of Georgia’s 6th congressional district – the former turf of Republican Newt Gingrich – chose her to represent them in Congress.

Former ocean engineer turned lawyer and new father Joe Cunningham, whose eight-month-old son slept through the night for the first time on election eve, made history by being the first Democrat to represent South Carolina’s 1st district since 1981.

And Mikie Sherrill, Naval academy graduate and former helicopter pilot, beat out her GOP rival to represent New Jersey’s 11th congressional district.

We could go on.

And on.

But all of these new representatives have something in common, besides having won their races.

They were supported by thousands of It Starts Today subscribers, who helped crowdfund their victory with small dollar monthly donations from folks just like you.

And, although our 2018 project ended yesterday, we aren’t ending our efforts.

We’re going to keep going and set our sights on 2020, so that we can keep seeing success stories like these. Stories of real people running. Real people winning.

Real people representing real people.

So if today you’re wondering what you can do to keep our country moving forward and to help elect people that will represent all of us, we hope you’ll check out our 2020 congressional project.

It’s a unique crowdfunding platform that distributes the funds raised from all of us equally between every single Democratic nominee for House and Senate. We play no favorites, and we leave nobody behind, and funds go to the nominee – not to some third party or consultant.

The funds we distribute are raised through grassroots, small-dollar monthly donations in increments of $5.35 (one penny for each of the 435 House seats and one penny for each of the 100 Senate seats).

Our Democratic nominees are going to need the power of all of us to help fight back. There’s no time to waste, and there’s no reason to wait.

Let’s keep moving forward, together.
