Wake Up to Your Power

Whether it seems like it or not, we’ve got the power.

We just have to wake up to it.

Don’t believe me? Stop looking at polls and start looking around you. In election after election, city after city, red state after crimson red state – we see Democratic turnout skyrocket. It’s through the roof. All over the country.

This is not a blip.

Okay, maybe if you’re not living in the midwest or some other red part of the country, this all might seem pretty theoretical. If your only exposure to the electoral earthquake happening in middle America is a grainy video clip on The Rachel Maddow Show, it might seem like we’re overstating things.

But head to a red state and go to a meeting of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, or a postcard writing party for a local candidate, or a town hall for a congressional nominee.

It’s packed.

And it’s not packed with paid staffers. Oh no – it’s packed with people who have never – never not once! – been involved in politics before who are engaged, and energized, and ready to fight to spread a Democratic message.

The tens of thousands of people packed shoulder-to-shoulder in sweaty union halls and crowded basements, who stand in the scorching summer heat at fairgrounds and backyards and farm fields to hear what our new Democratic leaders have to say – those people are ready to work and fight and win.

They just want someone to point them in the right direction.

So the question is not if we have the power.

The question is whether we will use the power that we have – and what we’ll use it for.

We could use it to win a few elections this cycle – which on its own would be great.

Or we could use it to change the entire system.

Buckminster Fuller once said that if you want to change things, stop fighting the existing reality and create a new model that makes the old one obsolete.

We took that to heart at It Starts Today. Because let’s face it – our campaign finance system is broken. When billionaires get to decide who gets into Congress we end up with tax breaks for the super rich and cuts to healthcare.

So let’s fix it. How? Well, we could take a page out of the GOP playbook and find our own stable of high-rolling donors to go toe-to-toe with the Koch brothers. That’s probably the easiest way to go about it.

But we’re Democrats. We never do things the easy way.

We do things the right way.

And the right way is to take our grassroots power – the power of the bedrock foundation of our party – and use it to provide foundational funding for Democrats all across the country.

The right way is to use our massive numbers to crowdfund campaigns using small-dollar monthly donations from regular people all across the country that will continue from cycle to cycle.

The right way is to stop picking and choosing who gets funding based on some poll that predicts what district is flippable, or whether the powers that be think they’ll win.

Nope – the right way is to ensure that every Democratic nominee is treated equally and is given the same amount of financial support – whether the district they’re in is blue, red or purple with yellow polka-dots. Whether they’ve been branded as a flippable seat or a lost cause.

Because we believe everyone deserves a chance.

If you think that sounds a lot like DIY public financing, you’d be right. Hey – if our elected officials won’t pass it, we’ll just do it ourselves.

And just imagine what that would mean. With tens -or hundreds!- of thousands of people donating $5/month for two years, we’d be able to give every single Democratic nominee for House and Senate a campaign budget that was written not just by a few deep-pocked donors.

But by all of us.

And we’d be using our power to make broad, structural changes that will last far longer than one election.

So our problem is not that we don’t have the power.

It’s that we just need to wake up. And use it.

If you’re ready to exercise your power but aren’t quite sure how to do it, we’ve made it super simple for you. Our unique crowdfunding platform lets individuals commit to a monthly donation (at whatever amount they’re comfortable with). The money raised by all of us goes directly to every Democratic nominee for the House and Senate in 2018. No middle person. No high priced consultants taking a cut. No favorites played.

Just the power of numbers – both people and money – to show that enough is enough. It’s time to take back our country.
